How Shalom became Salem
In the Torah (5 Books of Moses) Shalom is written without vowels and the design at the top left of the first letter, shin, could be read as sin. Shalom is spelled in English as “ Sh or S, L, v and M.” See below.
Since Hebrew was a dormant language at the time, the actual pronunciation was a guess. Therefore, it could be read as “Salem”
